Cliff Ganus engaged life in a number of ways. In the academic world he was a scholar, a popular teacher and lecturer, and a university president and chancellor. As a church leader he was an outstanding preacher, an elder for the College Church of Christ for fifty-four years, a designated representative of the Churches of Christ to three countries, committed to the spread of the gospel in this country and abroad, and a founder and director of a Christian academy in Africa. As an adventurer he rode the Trans-Siberian Railway, climbed the Great Pyramid, visited 117 countries, made four seven-hundred-mile Mississippi River trips in a small boat, loved athletics as a participant and supporter, took friends and family fishing in Alaska every August, and never stopped exploring and learning. He was a devoted and admired patriarch to his family, and he kept a list of over 500 friends whom he telephoned every year on their birthday. This is his story of his life. For those who knew him it is a reminder of the joy and commitment which characterized him. Those in the Harding University and Church of Christ fellowships will recognize many of the people who play a role in the narrative. For those who did not know him, this is an introduction to a man who was committed to God, family, and service, told with a dash of adventure and humor in his own words - an ordinary accounting of an extraordinary life. All proceeds from the sale of this book, after expenses, will go to the Clifton L. and Louise Ganus Endowed Scholarship Fund at Harding University.

Growing up in a Church of Christ community, my views about what type of congregational music was proper, what was forbidden, and what was suspicious were shaped early. Those initial conclusions have been, and are being, reshaped by a lifetime of experiences and study, including visiting with various congregations and denominations in scores of countries; engaging with worship leaders through the Music in Worship activities of the American Choral Directors Association; planning worship services for years as a song leader of the College Church of Christ; directing a collegiate choir for over fifty years and interacting with its singers as they performed, learned, worshiped, and celebrated; developing an intense interest in understanding the history of the church; and teaching a hymnology class for over thirty years at Harding University. This book is a product of those activities. In addition to providing an overview of the history of congregational singing, its intent is to encourage the reader to honestly and critically consider what a Christian song does for those who participate in and are affected by it. - Cliff Ganus
